A Faubert own goal (75) and a late Adebayor (90+1) finish gave Arsenal the points against a well drilled West Ham side. Carlton Cole was sent off in the last minute for a tackle from behind on Song.
Substitute Emmanuel Adebayor came on in the second half and he made a quick impact, his cross-shot put into his own net by Frenchman Faubert. Adebayor rounded things off in the ninetieth minute, knocking the ball past Green and shooting in an empty net.
West Ham United were in the game for three-quarters of the match, not least kept in by a number of Green saves and twice by the woodwork. However the England stopper could have been sent off early if the referee and linesman had spotted that he had caught a long ball outside his box. Theo Walcott hit the bar and had a shot well saved in the first half while Nicklas Bendtner had a palmed by Green.
Arsene Wenger sprung a surprise by not naming Denilson in the squad and after midweek’s defensive shortcomings it was up to Song to pressure the West Ham players in front of the defense today in which he performed well.
In the second half Van Persie had three good chances, a shot saved from Green, block from Faubert and a fierce free kick which struck the post. It looked like nothing would go in but the introduction of Adebayor changed that. His cross-shot to the far post was diverted unluckily into his own net by Faubert.
Adebayor then linked up well with Bendtner but his shot was saved and follow up over the bar. The Togolese man then finished the game off rounding the keeper from a superb pass from Bendtner, rounding Green and scoring. Carlton Cole got a red card in the last minute out of frustration for a tackle on behind.
The Englishman led the line well for the Hammers while Bellamy’s pace was a constant danger but the Gunners found a way through courtesy of Adebayor, with a little help on the way.
