Arsene Wenger Wants Martin Keown as Defensive Coach

Arsene Wenger wants to hire Martin Keown as Arsenal’s defensive coach thought to be for a limited period. The former Arsenal defender is also wanted by Tony Adams as Portsmouth’s assistant manager but is thought by Wenger as the ideal man to improve on the Gunners’ defensive deficiencies. Tony Adams said:

“I had a quick conversation with Arsène Wenger [the Arsenal manager] about Martin and Arsène was thinking of taking Martin himself,” Adams, whose side were defeated at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, said.

“I have a few other people in mind, too, but I want it in place fairly quickly because I’m doing too much work and need another experienced defender to tell our inexperienced defenders where they’re going wrong.”

Keown is unsure where his future lies in the game, whether long term or short term so the temporary Arsenal position may be an attractive proposition as he is happy to be working at BBC in the mean time. The Arsenal defense has been criticised in recent years let alone the last few weeks and was exposed by Rory Delap’s long throws in the 2-1 defeat to Stoke City.
